OFFICIAL SELECTION
A curated selection of AI-assisted and hybrid films chosen for narrative intent, human authorship, coherence, and cinematic impact.
CINEMA SHIFT FESTIVAL 2027 · TORONTO
The next edition of Cinema Shift Festival is being built around story-driven films, stronger filmmaker participation, and focused conversations about authorship, creative practice, and how AI is changing cinema.
THE 2027 EDITION
A curated selection of AI-assisted and hybrid films chosen for narrative intent, human authorship, coherence, and cinematic impact.
More space for filmmakers to discuss process, creative decisions, limitations, failures, discoveries, and the realities behind the finished work.
A developing professional layer connecting filmmaking with production, VFX, post-production, creative technology, research, and the wider screen industries.
A broader 2027 competition spanning narrative genres, hybrid filmmaking, documentary, music video, vertical drama, Canadian work, and audience recognition.
A STRONGER FILMMAKER FOCUS
For 2027, we want audiences to spend more time with the people behind the work: how a film was conceived, where AI entered the process, what remained traditional, what changed during production, and where the filmmaker drew creative or ethical boundaries.
The goal is not to celebrate technology for its own sake. It is to create a useful record of how filmmaking is changing while keeping human creative intent at the centre.
2027 SUBMISSIONS
We keep the submission path simple: detailed eligibility, categories, and evaluation criteria live on Cinema Shift Festival; the actual film entry is completed directly through FilmFreeway.
BUILT ON 2026
Cinema Shift Festival launched on June 5, 2026 at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto. The sold-out inaugural edition brought together more than 200 attendees, screened 16 films, and drew submissions from 28 countries.
For 2027, we are building on that foundation rather than turning the festival into a technology showcase.
EXPLORE THE 2026 EDITION →OUR CURATORIAL POSITION
AI is treated as a filmmaking tool and a cultural force, not an author. Technical novelty alone is not enough.
We are interested in what the work reveals about story, craft, creative control, labour, ethics, aesthetics, and changing production methods.
